Our Art Curriculum
A brief overview of the topics ,themes, and media that PK-8 students will learn at Graham.
Grades PK-2
In primary grades (PK-2), students will work in studio centers to practice, gain familiarity, and experiment with art materials. These grade levels will work within themes and big ideas to help find focus in their explorations and experiments. PK-2nd grade students will gain experience in appropriate and safe art material usage, 2D and 3D explorations, color, lines, and pattern, as well as gaining creative confidence in the art room.
Grades 3-5
In grades 3-5, students will fully engage in the artistic process of envisioning, drafting, and independently pursuing their own creative ideas. Students will also practice titling their artwork and writing artist statements. As the year progresses, "studio centers" open and students gain access to each studio and its materials by completing art challenges and "entry tickets" to help them learn the necessary skills. An example of this may be demonstrating proper scissor or glue usage in a mini-collage in order to use the collage studio every day. By the end of the year, all studios will be open, artists will gain experience in all areas of the art room, and relevant and exciting artists will be woven throughout the curriculum.
Grades 6-8
In grades 6-8, students deeply develop their own personal portfolio. Students will delve into topics in identity, community, current events, and more. Students may explore themes of personal meaning to them, embark on deep-dives in a specific media or topic, and integrate other areas of interest into the art room. An example of this may be creating graphic novels, 3D explorations in architecture, posters or murals with a personal message, and more. Middle schoolers will also develop artist statements to help them reflect on their artwork. Middle school students have a big voice, and in the art room they are encouraged to use it!
